Mum ‘hatfished’ as online shopping fail leaves her ‘looking like Shaun Ryder’

A mum claims she was ‘hatfished’ after buying a wide-brimmed hat that she reckons made her look like Shaun Ryder form the Happy Mondays.

Lizzy Toplicean ordered a grey chapeau hat from an independent seller on Amazon after seeing a chic model donning it in photos.

She paid £10.98 and waited two weeks for her new purchase to arrive at the door.

But when the 32-year-old opened the packaging, she was disappointed to pull out a crumpled bucket hat that she claims left her looking like Shaun Ryder.

Lizzy, from Bath, said: “I couldn’t believe it when it came. I remember thinking ‘it’s absolutely nothing like it’. I was definitely hatfished.

“I tried it on and looked in the mirror. I thought it had ‘Madchester’ vibes – like Shaun Ryder in the Happy Mondays. Either that or a fisherman.”

The mum-of-one, who has a daughter called Bella, splashed out on several new hats after undergoing a kidney transplant last year. The medication she takes makes her skin more sensitive to sunlight.

Lizzy said: “I’ve never been one to wear hats so I needed to buy a few, I chose this one because I liked the colour.

“I thought it looked quite fashionable and comfortable.

“I’ve never worn summer hats because I’ve never thought they’ve suited me, it was important to try and find one that’s fashionable.

“When I opened it I didn’t think it was the same hat for a second so I went back and checked what I ordered and it was definitely the right order number.”

Miffed at what she’d received, Lizzy popped the hat on and took a funny photo to send it to her friends – who thought it was “absolutely hilarious.”

Lizzy said: “I returned the hat because it was hilariously nothing like what I ordered.

“I think they [the seller] knew, as soon as I applied for a refund and dropped it off I got one straight away no problem.”

Luckily, Lizzy recovered from the experience to find a few straw hats that were perfect to shield her in the summer.

Lizzy said: “I’m a bit wary of buying hats online now, I’ve stuck to straw hats since.

“The other two I bought this year that I kept were floppy straw hats – I haven’t tried anything I’m not familiar with anymore.”
